Forestry & Vegetation Analysis

Atlas Mapping Solutions provides high-resolution aerial LiDAR mapping for forestry and vegetation analysis using the Zenmuse L3 multi-return sensor capable of capturing canopy, understory, and ground returns in a single acquisition. This enables development of digital terrain models, canopy height models (CHM), and vegetation density datasets for biomass estimation, habitat mapping, and land management planning. Continuous structural data reduces sampling bias compared to plot-based field measurement.

Vegetation Penetration: Up to 16 returns per pulse allow separation of canopy, understory, and ground surfaces.

Stand Metrics: Tree heights, biomass, and density are derived from classified point clouds. Multi-temporal acquisitions support growth and harvest monitoring.

Accuracy: Bare-earth elevation accuracy is approximately 3 cm RMSE under optimal RTK conditions. Canopy height accuracy typically ranges 15–30 cm depending on density (exact canopy RMSE not documented by DJI).

Coverage: Several square kilometers can be captured per flight. Delivery timelines are typically 1–2 weeks depending on area and classification complexity.

Deliverables: Classified point clouds, DTMs, CHMs, vegetation density layers, and optional 3D mesh or TIN models.

Legacy Methods vs LiDAR: Field plot sampling measures limited trees. LiDAR surveys entire stands, significantly reducing sampling error and improving spatial consistency.
